MISSION STATEMENT
Mid-America Diabetes Associates, P.A. (MADA) is committed to improving the quality of diabetes care through patient and professional education and participation in diabetes related research. MADA believes all individuals with diabetes and their families should be empowered with sufficient knowledge and understanding about diabetes to participate in daily self-management to achieve their optimal level of metabolic control. Living with diabetes requires the support of a diabetes team with the center of the team being the individual with diabetes.
PARNTERS IN EDUCATION
We encourage your participation in our Diabetes Education Program. The center approaches the treatment of each patient through intensive medical management and education in the critical areas of meal planning, medication, exercise and motivation. Through the use of a multi-disciplinary team, the treatment plan for each patient is individually developed and monitored to assure control of blood glucose levels, and to enable the person with diabetes to reach and maintain an optimum level of health.
Julie Dvorak, RN, BSN, CDE was recently recognized by the American Diabetes Association-Kansas Area as the Outstanding Camp Volunteer. Julie is a Research Nurse and has been a Diabetes Educator at MidAmerica Diabetes Associates, PA (MADA) for the past 10 years. She attended Camp Discovery, a camp for children with diabetes, since she was in the 4th grade when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She grew up in the rural community of Axtell and at the time did not know anyone else with diabetes. It was at Camp Discovery that she learned there are many children in the state of Kansas and the US that have type 1 diabetes. She pursued a career in nursing with the intent of becoming a diabetes educator. She has not only attended Camp Discovery as a camper but as a CIT (counselor in training), counselor, nurse, and this well be her four year as a nursing director. She has been coordinating the donations for all medical supplies for the past seven years which involves determining what needs to be ordered, sorting through the arrival of all the glucose meters and supplies, insulins, hypoglycemia treatment supplies, and securing the non-diabetes medical supplies for the infirmary like chigger itch and antibiotics. She also reviews all the camper medical charts to assure that we are prepared for any special needs children and any non-diabetes health issues.
Julie also took the medical lead for the last Camp Discovery accreditation by the American Camping Association reviewing all the medical policies and medical staff related issues associated with this accreditation.
As nursing director, she had recruited and led the medical and nursing staff as well as coordinated the educational activities for the children. She has presented the medical information for staff training as well as been astute to the liability and risk issues associated with operating a camp for children with diabetes.
Julie has been a member of the Camp Discovery Committee for 10 years. Julie has been a major contributor to the ongoing success of Camp Discovery which gives children with diabetes an opportunity to learn more about diabetes spend time with children and adults who successfully live with diabetes and gives parents a much needed respite from the day-to-day challenges of supporting a child with diabetes.
Julie finds this cause so important that she finds time while caring for a family of five children and working a MADA. We at Mid-America Diabetes Associates are very proud of Julie and her accomplishments.
