What does it mean to be a goalkeeper? Well... its the last line of defense, first line of attack. Make one mistake as a goalkeeper and it can cost you the game. The goalkeeper is the most important and unique position on the Football pitch. All the good work carried out for on-field players on the training pitch is wasted if you do not have a good reliable goalkeeper on match day. Different skills and training needs to be applied for the goalkeeper.
Head - a goalkeeper needs to understand the game from the back and communicate relavent information to his outfield players. Good positioning not only for shot stopping will give a goalkeeper certain advantage that most outfield coaches are not aware of but take for granted.. Distrubution, when to, and as importnat, when not to distribute to certain channels.
Hands - the tools of the goalkeepers trade. A good goalkeeper has good eye to hand co-ordination. He knows instinctively where his hands are and where they need to go for certain saves.
Feet - goalkeepers need to have good on-field skills, dribbling and passing particularly. Agility and quickness of step is also vital for good positioning and shot blocking.
