November is American Diabetes Month—a time to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of prevention and control. The American Diabetes Association says there are nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States living with diabetes, and an additional 57 million Americans at risk. Diabetes is not merely a condition. It is disease with deadly consequences. But it can be controlled, which is especially important moving into the holiday season.
Here are some tips on managing diabetes through the holidays:

Plan ahead for festivities. Write upcoming events on a calendar so you can see what’s ahead and plan eating accordingly. Make a conscious decision not to indulge on routine days and save any splurges for parties.

Don’t be guilted into eating. You can acknowledge the work someone put into making a special treat without actually eating it. Feast with your eyes. Make the calories you eat count and decide if the threat is really worth it.

Focus on non-food traditions. The holidays are about family, friends and fun. Create new family traditions that don’t involve food or try making your own holiday treats using “light” ingredients and sugar substitutes.

Walk it out. It’s important to really step up your exercise during the holidays. An increase in exercise can help offset diet slip ups.

Keep long-term goals in sight. Write them down if you have to. Check your blood sugar more often and make sure you’re staying in your target range. You can’t deny yourself every treat, moderation will help you enjoy the holidays and start the new year without regrets.

Get support through the season. St. Mary’s and St. Joseph Medical Centers have Diabetes Support Groups meeting monthly. The St. Mary’s group meets on the third Monday of each month, at 7 p.m. (Call 816-655-5244 for information.) The St. Joseph group meets on the third Thursday of the month, at 7 p.m. (Call 816-943-2489 for information.)
