Quality Ornamental Iron, Inc. came into existence 40 years ago on August 19, 1963. My Father, Harold A. Price, had a background as a carpenter, crew foreman and general foreman. He was a natural choice to head up a builders new acquisition-an ornamental iron company. Working sales to vice president, he make this new company a major contender in a few short years. Then the company was sold, leaving my father with two choices: tough it out with a new owner or go out on his own. And (voila!) Quality Ornamental Iron was born. Through carpentry, sales experience and a natural ability with people, he was bound to be successful even though he never learned how to weld. Most of his fellow workers followed him within a few weeks.
At the age of 14, having already worked two summers at the former company, I helped set up the new shop. My most vivid memory is over loading one side of the rack and having it nearly end my career
Over the next few years, we grew steadily, becoming a major ornamental iron company. We followed a local builder/apartment contractor out of town, and by 1974, we were working apartments in sixteen states from Georgia to Arizona and from Michigan to Alabama. However, it had been drilled into my head that Rule #1 was NEVER forget the little guys who put us where we are, so we kept up with our in-town contractors and individuals in Kansas City, even if it meant (and often times it did) working three shifts-24 hours a day-during the week and performing out-of-town installations on the weekends.
As of 1992, with the exception of a year and a half, I had been with the company for 29 years. I swept floors, worked in sales and installed everything, including a four-story steel staircase in weather cold enough to freeze a penguin. Rule #1 prevailed. I have learned from very talented people over the years, and added my own ideas about the business. When my dad was ready to retire, I was ready do buy the business, continuing tradition and looking for new ideas, concepts, tools and experience to further this business and serve out clients. I impress on every new employee, "If you wouldnt have it in you house, dont leave it for the homeowner."
I know my business, but I couldnt do it without a good crew. No man succeeds in a business without good help. We all work together to produce top quality interior and exterior railing and fencing from the splash of class on the front stoop of an entry-level home up to multi-million dollar homes over Greater Kansas City. Although we know our limitations, we still push the limits to give out clients the best possible product at a reasonable cost.
