This canyon sometimes called Devil’s Canyon is located 10 miles north of Dighton. Along the southern rim is a wall contanting rocks, boulders, boards and debris can still be seen, that are remnants of Wild Horse Corral. Stories indicate that this box canyon was used to pen and catch free roaming wild horses in the late 1890’s. When the first settlers came bands of horses roamed the area.

Wild Horse Canyon is well known as a historical hunting ground for the Indians. It had a spring so water was readily available for them. Many arrow heads, scrapers, arrow head chips and other artifacts have been found and can be seen at the Lane County Historical Museum located in Dighton. Artifacts are still found today.

A well documented military battle between a detachment of Army soldiers dispatched from Fort Hays, and a small band of Indians is thought to have occurred just to the north of the Wild Horse Canyon and Corral area.

Aside from the Canyon the bluffs, and chalk cliffs and ledges are home to fossils, shark’s teeth and bones of creatures who lived in the ocean located here during the Cretaceous period. Many rocks and stones including petrified wood, Kansas Diamonds, and agates can be found.
